Osmington

Located a short distance to the north-east of Weymouth lie the villages of Sutton Poyntz (SY 705 835) and Osmington (SY 725 830). This gallery follows a short circular walk, taken on a bright winters day in January. Starting at the duck-pond in Sutton Poyntz the route ascends onto the chalk escarpment overlooking this coastal valley. Along many of the ridge-lines in this area can be found traces of ancient civilizations, the most prominent being the many tumuli (believed to be burial mounds) that still remain – some 3000 or more years after they were first constructed.

Following the South-West Coast Path eastwards the route drops off the ridge after a short distance and passes through the village of Osmington. Here there is again evidence of the long history of this part of the county; remains of an old manor house adding character to the churchyard. The route continues along the coastal path south to Osmington Mills (SY 735 817) where the Smuggler's Inn provides welcome refreshments. The final leg of the route is then westwards along the coastal cliffs to Redcliff Point (SY 712 816) where it finally turns inland once more, returning to Sutton Poyntz.
