IbbertonThe south-west edge of the Blackmoor Vale is marked by a steep chalk escarpment, rising some 150m above the relatively flat vale below. Following the top edge of the escarpment is the Wessex Ridgeway, a long-distance bridleway that crosses the county. Several points along this route afford excellent views across the vale to the west, north and east. The scenes shown here were taken during a brief respite in a prolonged spell of rain and gales, early November.

Located at the base of the escarpment are a number of small villages, following the spring line. The village of Ibberton featuring in the pictures above is typical of the area, a mix of housing from the 1600's through to recent additions. Perched on the hillside a short way above the village is the small church of St Eustace, dating from the 15th century.
